Sign in with a password
The password screen, what else it offers, and what happens after a correct password.
On this page
A password is one of the ways to sign in. It is asked after you have said who you are on the first screen, when the sign-in needs a password from you.
The password screen#
The screen is titled Enter your password and says Sign in to continue. It has one field and several controls.
- Type your password in the Password field.
- Select Sign in.
- A correct password always signs you in. On a browser your account already uses, that is all: the sign-in carries on to whatever comes next. If something looks unusual, such as a new browser or place, and your account has a passkey or an authenticator app, the page asks for it next. See The second step.
Under the form you can also choose:
- Sign in with a passkey, to use a passkey instead. See Sign in with a passkey.
- Email me a sign-in link, to get a link and a code instead of typing the password. See Sign in with an emailed link or code.
- Use a different email, to go back to the first screen and start again with another address.
In the footer, Forgot password? opens account recovery. Each of these controls appears only when it applies to you.

- The Password field.
- Email me a sign-in link.
- Forgot password?, in the footer.
After the password#
What follows a correct password depends on the account and on where you came from. One or more of these can appear, roughly in this order:
- The second step, when your account has one and the sign-in looks unusual, or when an application or organization requires it. You can answer it, Email me a code instead, or choose Continue with my password only (limited session). If a passkey is your only second step and you have lost it, there is also an I lost my passkey link to account recovery.
- Confirm a new browser or place, when the sign-in looks unfamiliar.
- Choose a password, when the account has none.
- Add a passkey offer, where the platform offers to create a passkey.
- Choose an organization, when your account belongs to more than one (or Create your workspace, when the application needs one and you have none).
- Allow access, when an application asks to see your account.
Choose a password#
Every human account has a password. If yours has none (an account made before that was required, or one that only ever signed in with a link or a passkey), the sign-in stops at a screen titled Choose a password that says Every account needs a password. Choose one to finish signing in. Its window title is also Choose a password.
- Type the new password in New password and again in Confirm the new password. The hint says Use a long passphrase. Pasting from a password manager works. If the two entries differ the screen says The two entries do not match.
- Select Save password and continue. Use a different email, below the form, abandons the sign-in and starts again.
- The sign-in carries on to the organization picker, the consent screen or the application.
No session exists until the password is saved: you cannot skip the screen by going straight to the application. The screen comes after the second step and the new-browser check, so an account that has an authenticator app or a passkey has to answer one of them first; a lone emailed link is never enough to set a first password on such an account. A password you have just typed on this very sign-in counts as the password, so that sign-in is not asked again. An account that an organization manages, and machine accounts, are never shown the screen. The same rule means recovery and registration both end with a password; see Recovering your account.
What can go wrong#
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Those details did not work. Check them and try again. | The password did not work. The message never says which part was wrong. |
| Too many attempts. Wait a little and try again. | Requests came too often. Wait, then try again. Where known, the page says how long, in seconds, minutes or hours. |
| This sign-in has ended | The sign-in took too long or was cancelled. Select Start a new sign-in. See Sign-in errors and what they mean. |
| Sign-in was refused | This sign-in cannot continue. The page offers Recover your account. |
You are not asked to choose a password after typing one; that screen is for sign-ins that did not use a password, on an account that has none.
A password you cannot remember is not a dead end: use Forgot password?, or sign in with a passkey or an emailed link if you have one.
Changing your password#
You change a password from your account, not from this screen. See Security and passkeys. Changing it also signs your other devices out. See Sessions and devices.
