Add a passkey offer

The Add a passkey screen that can appear while you sign in, what creating a passkey does, and what skipping it does.

On this page

A passkey signs you in with your device lock, with no password to type or steal. Where the platform offers it, a screen titled Add a passkey can appear in the middle of a sign-in to suggest creating one. It says A passkey signs you in with your device lock, with no password to type or steal.

The screen lists two reasons to use a passkey:

  • Signs in with your device lock. Face, fingerprint or screen lock. Nothing to type.
  • Resists phishing. The private key stays on your device or in your password manager, and only works on our real site.

When you see it#

The offer is made only in some sign-ins. You are most likely to see it just after a password sign-in, while your account has no passkey and no authenticator app yet. You are not offered it at every sign-in, so skipping it does not mean it is asked again straight away. Whether the offer is available at all depends on where your organization allows it.

The Add a passkey offer in the middle of a sign-in: two reasons to use a passkey, a Create a passkey button and a Skip for now link.
  1. Create a passkey.
  2. Skip for now.

Create a passkey#

  1. On Add a passkey, select Create a passkey.
  2. Your browser or device shows its own prompt. Approve it with your device lock, and choose where to keep the passkey if it asks.
  3. The screen says Passkey created. Continuing. and the sign-in carries on.

You can use the passkey from the next sign-in. The sign-in you are in the middle of continues as it would have anyway. If the page tells you your passkey is saved and to sign in again, do so, and use the passkey. See Sign in with a passkey.

Skip it#

Select Skip for now, the link at the foot of the card. The sign-in carries on exactly as it would have without the offer. Nothing is created and nothing about your account changes.
