Leaving an organization
How to leave an organization, what the confirmation says, what stays behind and the three cases where leaving is refused.
On this page
You can leave any organization you are an active member of, at any time, from your account. You do not need an administrator's permission. This page covers the steps, what leaving does and does not do, and the three situations where it is refused.
Leave an organization#
- Open Organizations in the account navigation. The Memberships page lists your organizations.
- Find the organization. Only a row with the status Active has a Leave button, and not even that where leaving is refused (see below).
- Select Leave.
- Read the dialog titled Leave this organization?. It says you lose access to it, and that an administrator has to invite you again for you to rejoin.
- Select Leave organization.
Leaving does not normally ask for a second factor. It does ask you to confirm in the dialog, because you cannot rejoin by yourself. The exception is a session opened with the lost-passkey email code, which is one level lower than a passkey session: it must first confirm a second factor you used in the last 30 minutes in the Confirm it is you dialog. See Sessions.
What leaving does#
- Your membership ends. The row stays in your list with the status Removed, and its Leave button goes away.
- You lose access to that organization. What you could do there through your role no longer applies, and your sessions bound to that organization are ended.
- You cannot undo it yourself. To rejoin, an administrator has to send you a new invitation. If an administrator does bring the membership back, the access you had does not come back with it. See Accepting an invitation.
- Access tokens for it stop working. A token you created for that organization shows the status Inactive on Access tokens, because you are no longer an active member of it.
What leaving does not do#
- It does not delete your account, and it does not touch your memberships in other organizations.
- It does not remove the history of your time there. Events about your account stay in your activity for as long as that page keeps them.
When leaving is refused#
Leaving is refused in three cases, each shown on the row:
-
The personal organization you own cannot be left. It is your home on the platform. The row carries a note headed This is your personal organization that says it is your home on the platform and cannot be left. Instead the row offers Upgrade to an organization: see Memberships.
-
The last platform administrator cannot leave the internal organization. The row carries a note headed You are the last administrator. that says so, and that the role has to be granted to another account first.
-
An account that an organization manages cannot leave the organization that manages it. The row carries a note headed Managed by this organization that says "Your organization manages this account, so only its administrators can end this membership." Only that organization's administrators can end that membership.
-
An account that an organization manages cannot leave the organization that manages it. The row is headed Managed by this organization and says Your organization manages this account, so only its administrators can end this membership. Only that organization's administrators can end that membership.
The Memberships page tells you all three before you try. On such a row the Leave button is not shown.
If a leave is still refused when it is submitted (for example because the situation changed since the page loaded, or because your account is managed by the organization), the page shows the platform's own message under the button, and the membership stays Active. Every other organization lets you leave freely.
What can go wrong#
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| No Leave button on a row | The membership is not Active (a Suspended or Removed one cannot be left again), or the row shows one of the notes above (your personal organization, you are the last platform administrator, or Managed by this organization). |
| A note that this is your personal organization | It cannot be left. |
| A note that you are the last administrator | See above. Another account has to hold the role first. |
| The note Managed by this organization | The organization manages your account. Only its administrators can end the membership. |
| The row now says Removed | The leave worked. |
| You want back in | Ask an administrator of the organization to invite you again. |
