Sign in with a passkey
How a passkey signs you in, by button or from your browser's autofill list, and what to do when it does not work.
On this page
A passkey is a sign-in method that uses your device lock: your face, your fingerprint or your screen lock. There is nothing to type and nothing to steal. The passkey's private key stays on your device or in your password manager, and it only works on the real TDACorp site. That is why the sign-in page describes passkeys as signing in with your device lock and resisting phishing. To add or remove passkeys, see Security and passkeys.
Sign in with the button#
- On the sign-in page, select Sign in with a passkey. The same button is on the password screen, where it reads Sign in with a passkey as well.
- Your browser or device shows its own prompt. Approve it with your device lock or by choosing the passkey you want to use.
- You are signed in, and the sign-in carries on to whatever comes next.
You do not need to type your email first. The button opens the browser's own chooser of the passkeys it holds for this site.
Autofill#
When passkeys are available, the email field carries the hint Your browser may offer a saved passkey in the field below. Click into the field. A browser that supports it shows your saved passkeys in the autofill list under the field. Pick one and approve the prompt. This is the same sign-in as the button, started from the field instead.
Autofill waits quietly in the background. If your browser does not support it, or you dismiss the list, nothing is shown and nothing is wrong: you can still type your email and continue, or use the button.
After the passkey#
A passkey sign-in does not normally ask for a separate second step, because the passkey already proves it is you with your device lock. A sign-in that looks unusual can still ask you to confirm it; see Confirm a new browser or place.
Where the sign-in came from an application, you may then see Choose an organization or Allow access before you are sent back.
What can go wrong#
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| This browser cannot use passkeys here. Use another method. | The browser or device cannot do passkeys on this page. Use another method that the page offers. |
| The passkey did not work. Try again or use another method. | The browser or your device refused or cancelled the prompt. Try again, or use another method. |
| That passkey could not be verified. Try again or use another method. | The passkey was presented but was not accepted. |
| The passkey prompt closed straight away. This device may have no passkey saved for this account, or the browser may not support passkeys. Sign in another way, then add a passkey on this device from Security. | The prompt closed at once, so this device probably has no passkey for the account or the browser cannot show it. |
An account that has a passkey and no authenticator app does not accept an emailed sign-in link or code as a way in. Asking for one ends on Sign-in was refused with This account signs in with a passkey. Start a new sign-in and use your passkey. If you lost it, recover your account. Start again and use the passkey, or the password and the second step. Where the lost-passkey option is on, a link or code can instead lead to a screen that offers Use my password instead; see If you lost your passkey.
Closing the prompt yourself, after it has been open for a moment, is not treated as an error and shows no message.
On Brave for Android, passkeys do not work yet. The button reads Open in Chrome to use your passkey and the page says Passkeys do not work in Brave on Android yet. Open this page in Chrome to use your passkey, or sign in another way. Select Try here anyway to attempt it in Brave.
Lost your passkey#
If you cannot reach the passkey but still know your password, type it. A correct password always signs you in: on a browser your account already uses it is enough, and on an unusual sign-in, when a passkey is the only second step on the account, the next screen offers Continue with my password only (limited session), Email me a code instead and a link, I lost my passkey. See If you lost your passkey. If you cannot reach any passkey and have no other way in, start account recovery.
