Search and keyboard use

How to jump to any page or action in your account with the search palette, and which keys it uses.

On this page

The top bar of your account has a search field labelled Search settings. It opens a palette: a small window with one search box that finds the pages and actions of your account, so you can reach one without going through the navigation. You can use it with the keyboard alone.

Open the palette#

There are two ways.

  • Select the Search settings field in the top bar. It shows the shortcut on its right: ⌘K on an Apple device and Ctrl K elsewhere.
  • Press Ctrl and K together, or ⌘ and K on an Apple device, from anywhere in your account. Pressing it again closes the palette.

The palette opens with the cursor in the search box, whose label and placeholder read Search settings, pages and actions. The first time you open it in a visit, it loads a moment later than the page itself.

The account search palette open over the overview with the search pass: results grouped under Pages and Actions, with the first result highlighted, and the keys to move, open and close at the bottom.

What it finds#

The palette follows the language of your account area, so its labels, hints and search words appear in your saved language (English, French or Spanish). The labels below are the English ones. See Languages.

The palette searches pages and actions. It does not search your data: it will not find a particular session, token or event, only the page where you manage them.

GroupWhat is in it
PagesThe pages of your account: Overview, Profile, Security, Devices, Apps and access, Organizations, Notifications and Your data, and the sub-pages inside them, such as Trusted devices, New token, Register an app, Notification settings, Export your data and Close account. A sub-page shows a muted hint with the area it belongs to.
ActionsAdd a passkey, Export your data and Sign out. Choosing Sign out signs you out. The other two open the page where you do it.
HelpDocs, and the Trust pages such as Trust and legal, with a muted Trust hint.

You can search by the title of a page, or by a related word. A page is also found by words it does not have in its title. For example, a search for deactivate or erase finds Close account, trusted browser finds Trusted devices, google or github finds the linked accounts page, totp finds the authenticator app page, and export download finds Export your data.

Results are grouped under Pages, Actions and Help. A screen reader announces how many results there are, for example 3 results, as you type.

If nothing matches, the palette says Nothing matches with what you typed, and Search finds pages and actions in your account. Try one of these. Under Suggestions it offers Devices, Export your data and Add a passkey, which you can choose like any result.

Keys#

KeyWhat it does
↑ and ↓Move to the previous or next result.
Home and EndJump to the first or last result.
Page Up and Page DownMove several results at once.
EnterOpen the highlighted result.
EscClose the palette.

The footer of the palette shows the three you will use most: ↑ ↓ to move, ↵ to open, Esc to close.

Choosing a result closes the palette and takes you there. Closing it with Esc returns the focus to where you were, and the next time you open it the search box is empty.

Other ways to move around#

  • The account navigation. A column on the left on wide screens and a strip across the top on phones. It lists the eight areas of your account. The organization switcher is at its top and the account menu (name, Docs, Trust and legal, Sign out) at its foot; on a phone both are in the strip.
  • Tabs. Each area with more than one page, such as Devices, has tabs. Each tab is its own address, so you can bookmark a page.
  • The bell. Opens the latest security events. See The security feed.
