Merge accounts

What you see when you bring a second account of your own into the one you are signed in to.

On this page

Status: In development. Merging is available only where your organization allows it. If it is not available, you will not see it offered, and opening the page shows Merging is not turned on with the line This platform does not offer account merging. and a Back to security link.

If you ended up with two accounts of your own, merging brings the second into the one you are signed in to. The page opens with Bring a second account of yours into this one. You prove you own it first.

Merging cannot be undone. The page warns Merging moves the other account into this one and cannot be undone. Do it only when you are sure which account you want to keep.

Where to find it#

When merging is available, the Linked accounts tab shows a Merge accounts section with a link Merge another account into this one, under the question Have a second account of your own? The page is titled Merge accounts and has three steps, shown as a progress strip labelled Merge steps: Find the account, Prove it is yours and Done. The page says which step you are on, for example Step 1 of 3: find the account.

Like the other security pages, it first asks you to confirm it is you with a recent second factor if you have not used one in the last 30 minutes. See The Security overview.

Step 1: find the account#

  1. Open Security, the Linked accounts tab, then Merge another account into this one.
  2. Under Which account?, type the Email address of the other account. The hint says The address must be verified on that account.
  3. Select Continue.

Step 2: prove it is yours#

The page shows Prove it is yours and Confirm you own the account for the address you typed, followed by the warning above. You prove ownership of the other account in one of two ways:

  • Type the Password of the other account. If that account has an authenticator app, also type the Authenticator code of the other account (the hint says Only if that account has an authenticator app.). Then select Merge accounts.
  • Or select Use a passkey of the other account and approve on your device. If the browser cannot use passkeys, the page says This browser cannot use passkeys.

If you typed the wrong address, select Use a different address to go back. Cancel on the first step takes you back to Linked accounts.

If the proof does not work, the page gives the same refusal whichever part was wrong. It never tells you whether the address, the password or the code was the problem.

Accounts that conflict, for example because they hold overlapping roles, grants, resources or memberships, cannot be merged. The page then says These two accounts cannot be merged because they conflict. An administrator may need to move things first.

Step 3: done#

The page says Accounts merged and The other account is now part of this one. Select Back to security to return to the Security overview. Check your passkeys, password and email addresses afterwards, so you know what the account now holds.
