Memberships

What it means to belong to an organization, how to read your list of memberships and what a personal workspace is.

On this page

An organization is a group your account can belong to, for example a company or a team. Your account stays yours. Membership is a link between your account and an organization, and it is what decides which organizations you can sign in to and what an application can do for you there.

What membership means for you#

  • You can belong to several. Each one is listed on the Memberships page with a status.
  • You choose which one you are working in. When your account belongs to more than one, sign-in can stop at Choose an organization. See Choosing an organization at sign-in. Inside your account, the organization switcher at the top of the navigation changes it for the account pages (see Changing organization).
  • What an application can do for you is limited by your role. An application that signs you in to an organization can only use the permissions your role there allows.
  • The organization's administrators can see your membership. The privacy notice says they see your membership, role and status. See Privacy.
  • You can leave. See Leaving an organization.

The Memberships page#

The Memberships page listing the three organizations the person belongs to, each active, with the date joined and a Leave button.
  1. Leave, on the row of an organization you belong to.
Organizations: where you are a member. Sample data./account/organizations

Open Organizations in the account navigation. The list is titled Your organizations, with a count in the heading. Each row shows:

  • the organization's name and a status badge;
  • a line with the kind of organization (Personal workspace, Organization or Platform organization) and your kind of membership (Owner, Member or Guest), and, for an organization under a parent, Part of and the parent's name;
  • Sponsored by and a name, for a guest;
  • Joined through the verified domain and the domain, when your account joined because its email address is on a domain the organization has verified;
  • Access ends and a date, when the membership has an end date;
  • Joined, the date you joined, when there is one;
  • a note instead of the Leave button when you cannot leave (see Leaving an organization).

Rows are in the order your memberships were created. An empty list says No organizations and that an organization appears here when you accept an invitation to it.

Statuses#

StatusMeaning
ActiveYou are a member. Only an Active membership has a Leave button.
SuspendedThe membership exists but is paused. You cannot use it until it is active again.
BlockedThe organization requires single sign-on and your account has no linked sign-in through it, so the membership is held. Only an administrator can lift it; see Single sign-on and managed accounts.
RemovedThe membership ended, because you left or because an administrator removed you. It stays in the list as a record. An administrator has to invite you again for you to rejoin.

If the platform cannot tell a status, the row says Unknown.

Invitations to join#

When an administrator has invited a verified email address of your account and the invitation is still open, a section titled Invitations to join appears above the list. Each row names the organization, the role when the invitation carries one (Role: and its name), for a guest invitation the terms (Guest access, sponsored by a name, for N days from the day you accept.), and Expires with a date. Accept joins the organization at once; Decline asks Decline this invitation?, says The invitation stops working. An administrator has to invite you again if you change your mind., and ends it on Decline invitation. Only addresses already verified on your account count, so an invitation to an address you have not verified does not appear here. See Accepting an invitation.

When an organization manages your account#

If an organization manages your account, a banner across the top of every account page says (your organization's name) manages this account. Its administrators control your sign-in methods, access tokens and membership. and its row says Managed by this organization with Your organization manages this account, so only its administrators can end this membership. See Single sign-on and managed accounts.

Your personal workspace#

Organizations come in kinds. Most are company or team organizations that you join by invitation. A personal workspace is an organization of the personal kind, meant for an individual rather than a company.

Each person has at most one personal workspace, and nobody else is a member of it. Creating an account does not create it. It is created the first time you sign in to an application that needs an organization and you have none: the sign-in stops on Create your workspace and nothing is made until you select Create my workspace. See Choosing an organization at sign-in. An account that an organization manages never gets a personal workspace.

You see a personal workspace in your list like any other organization, except that it has no Leave button: the row says This is your personal organization. and that it cannot be left. Some features are meant for individuals and act inside it, for example registering your own apps on Developer apps, where the page says Registering an app needs a personal workspace, and this account has none. when you do not have one.

Upgrade a personal workspace#

The row of your own personal workspace has Upgrade to an organization and the note "Members are managed in the TDACorp admin console once you upgrade." The dialog Upgrade your personal workspace? says: "Keeps your workspace, its apps and settings. Lets you invite people and manage members from the admin console. This cannot be undone here." Confirm with Upgrade workspace. Upgrading needs a second factor you used in the last 30 minutes (by default). Only the owner can upgrade it.

Joining an organization#

Most memberships start with an invitation: a link in an email that you open to accept. See Accepting an invitation. You cannot add yourself to an organization from this page.
