Organizations

What it means to belong to an organization, how to join one, how a sign-in picks one, and how to leave.

What this section is for#

An organization is a group your account can belong to, such as a company or a team. This section explains the account side of that: the list of organizations you belong to, how an invitation turns into a membership, how a sign-in decides which organization it is for, and how you leave one. It is for anyone who has been invited somewhere, belongs to more than one organization, or wants to step out of one.

Your account stays yours throughout. Membership is only a link between the account and an organization, and it is what decides which organizations you can sign in to and what an application can do for you there.

How the pieces fit#

You have a membership for each organization, and each membership has a status: Active, Suspended, Blocked or Removed. Only an active one gives access. A person who signs up on their own also has a personal workspace, which is an organization of their own. When a sign-in is for an application that works inside one organization at a time, and you have more than one active membership, the sign-in stops and asks you to choose.

invitation email -> Accept the invitation -> membership (Active) |sign-in, if you have several -> Choose an organization -> session for that one | Leave -> you must be invited again to return

Three typical journeys#

Someone invited me.

  1. Accepting an invitation: open the link and select Accept the invitation.
  2. Memberships: see the new row with its status.
  3. Choosing an organization at sign-in: what you will see next time you sign in.

I belong to several and the sign-in keeps asking.

  1. Choosing an organization at sign-in: when the screen appears and why.
  2. Choose an organization: the screen itself.
  3. Memberships: check which memberships are Active.

I want out of an organization.

  1. Leaving an organization: select Leave and confirm.
  2. Connected apps: review what you allowed while you were there.

What each page answers#

Memberships answers what membership means for you: you can belong to several, you choose which one you work in, your role limits what an application can do for you there, and the organization's administrators can see your membership, role and status. It also describes the Memberships page (the kind of organization and membership, the parent, the sponsor of a guest, an end date, the notice for a managed account and Invitations to join) and the personal workspace.

Accepting an invitation answers how to join. The invitation link is the usual way in, and an invitation to a verified address of your account also appears on the Memberships page to accept or decline. Opening the link changes nothing, which means a mail scanner cannot accept for you. It shows what you would join, and explains the two cases, an address that already has an account and one that does not.

Choosing an organization at sign-in answers when the Choose an organization screen appears, what the choice does and limits afterwards, how a filter appears at eight or more organizations and how to change organization.

Leaving an organization answers how to leave without an administrator's permission, what the confirmation says, what stays behind, and the three cases where leaving is refused (your personal organization, the last platform administrator, and an organization that manages your account).

Before you start#

You need an account and, to join, the invitation email. The invitation is tied to the address it was sent to and cannot be forwarded to someone else. Leaving asks you to confirm, and a session that signed in with the lost-passkey emailed code must first confirm with a second factor, because you cannot rejoin by yourself.

Common questions#

Can I join an organization without an invitation? Not from your account: you need an invitation. See Accepting an invitation.

Why was I not offered an organization in the picker? Only Active memberships are offered. See Choosing an organization at sign-in.

Can an administrator see that I belong? Yes: your membership, role and status. See Memberships.

What happens to my account if I leave? Nothing: your account is yours. See Leaving an organization.

What is a personal workspace? The organization of your own that a self-service account gets. See The personal workspace.

What this section does not cover#

It does not explain roles, permissions or how a product decides what you may do, which is in Authorization and Permissions and roles. Managing an organization's members and rules is for its administrators and is not part of this book. The idea of an organization is explained in Concepts.
