Closing your account

How to deactivate your account with the confirmation phrase, what happens at once and what to do first.

On this page

Closing your account is how you ask for your account and personal data to be removed. It happens in two stages: your account is deactivated at once, and your personal data is erased after a waiting period of 30 days. This page covers the first stage, and what to do before it. The second is on After you close your account.

The Close account tab of Your data has the form. Its description reads: "Deactivate your account now. Your personal data is erased after 30 days."

Before you close#

Closing cannot be undone from your account. Read these first.

  • Export your data first if you want a copy. After closing you cannot sign in, so you cannot ask for an export. The tab links to Export your data under Before you close, with the note that after closing you cannot sign in to request another copy. See Exporting your data.
  • Revoke what you no longer need. Closing revokes every session, token and personal access token for you, so there is no need to do so one by one.
  • Check you have a second factor. Closing needs a second factor you used in the last 30 minutes. An account with only a password cannot close until it adds one. See Security and passkeys.

What closing does#

The tab shows two rows under What closing does.

RowWhat it says
ImmediatelyYour account is deactivated immediately and permanently: every session, token and personal access token is revoked and you cannot sign in again.
After 30 daysYour personal data is not erased at that moment. Accounts deactivated for 30 days or more are erased by a scheduled erasure run.

Retention and deletion gives the period and lists what survives erasure.

The Close account page: what closing does immediately and after 30 days, a link to export your data first, and a box where you type the phrase delete my account before the Deactivate my account button.
  1. Export your data, under Before you close.
  2. The field labelled Type "delete my account" to confirm.
  3. Deactivate my account.

Close your account#

  1. Open Your data in the account navigation, then the Close account tab.
  2. Under Close your account, type delete my account in the field labelled Type "delete my account" to confirm. Type it exactly as shown, in lower case. The hint reads: Type the phrase exactly as shown.
  3. Select Deactivate my account.
  4. In the dialog Deactivate your account?, which says "This cannot be undone from here. You will be signed out everywhere.", select Deactivate account.
  5. If a Confirm it is you dialog opens, confirm with a passkey or an authenticator code. On a session you opened with a passkey, Other ways to confirm also offers your Account password. The close then goes through.

If the phrase does not match, the page says Type the phrase exactly to continue. and does not go further. Spaces around the phrase are ignored.

When the close succeeds, you are signed out of every session and taken to the signed-out page. You are also emailed, at your verified addresses, that your account was deactivated at your request.

When closing is refused#

What you seeWhat it means
This account is already deactivated. The account was closed earlier.
A message that you are the last administratorThe account holds the last administrator role of an organization. Another account has to hold it first.
This account cannot be deactivated right now.The platform refused the request. Try again later.
Your organization manages this account, so this is not available here. Ask your organization’s administrator.Accounts an organization manages cannot be closed from the account area: their lifecycle belongs to that organization.
Confirm it is you to continue. The action needs a recent second factor. Confirm and try again.

Closing an account that you cannot sign in to#

You can only close your account while you are signed in to it. If you cannot sign in, first try account recovery. If that does not work, Retention and deletion says how to reach the security contact.

What closing does not do#

  • It does not delete your data at the moment you click. Erasure comes later.
  • It does not delete anything that other organizations or apps hold about you under their own terms.
  • It does not tell you that every trace is gone. Some records survive erasure, as Retention and deletion lists.
